Vinya Mas del Xes Syrah 2018
Winemaker Notes
The climate conditions of 2018 resulted in an unusual Atlantic character vintage that
expresses the terroir in a subtle way due to a temperate year, over average, producing
smoother wines. First sorting was done in the field, leaving any unsuitable fruit in the
vineyard. The grapes were then further sorted by hand. All lots were cold-soaked for 2-3
days before beginning their slow fermentation in barrels and tanks. Gentle punch downs
were performed several times daily in both tank and 300L puncheon barrels; macerations
lasted more than 30 days for an optimum flavor and tannin extraction. The free-run wine
was racked and the skins and stems were gently pressed, being returned to their original
maceration barrels for aging. New and 1-year old French oak barrels were used for 18
months to host the wine before bottling, without fining or filtration
Tasting Notes
The color is a bright ruby. The nose has intense and outstanding floral aromatics of
wild violets and lavender followed with slight ashes, phosphor, and metamorphic rock
soils. There are hints of wild roses, dried hay, and ripe medlar. On the palate, we find
minerality and forest fruits such as blackberries. There is an astute structure to the wine
that expands in the mouthfeel, while still maintain freshness, and round velvet tannins.
This is a perfectly balanced wine with a and tenacious finish.
